Questions & Answers

How do I housetrain an adult dog?

An adult dog might revert to soiling in the house or has never been properly trained. For those older pets that relapse, make sure to check with your vet that thecause may not be medical or hormonal. If this is not the case, then it may be behavioral.

To begin, observe your dog carefully in an attempt to establish a pattern to his or her behavior, check when and where accidents happen. Older dogs mayhave accidents when he's upset, this is due to anxiety such as being alone for long periods of time during the day or loosing attention to another member of the family (child, new pet). Some dogs learn to sneak a quick pee or poop, when you're not looking. If he eliminates in the right spot while you're at home but not when he's out of your sight, try keeping track of his whereabouts on a regular basis.

Do not make a fuss if you find an accident in the house, clean it up properly with products such as OUT! Stain and Odor Remover to prevent your dog from marking his territory and heading back to soil there again. If and when you find him doing it on the wrong spot, let him know in a direct and strong tone of voice. Do not yell or physically punish your dog. Make sure to give him a yummy treat when he does it right!

How do I switch from Training Pads to Outdoors?

Make sure your pet is five months or older and consistently eliminating on a Training Pad. Then, begin to slowly move the pad closer to the door your pet would use to go outside. Only move it about a foot or so each day until the pad is out the door, fold the pad into smaller sizes until you eliminate it completely.

Should I train my puppy with pads?

Training Pads are an effective and clean way to housetrain pets.
OUT!™ Training Pads are made with Super Absorbent Polymer that turns liquid into a gel-like substance to prevent tracking and leakage. Training Pads are convenient and can be placed in several locations in your house, making it easier for your puppy to quickly find the spot where he is supposed to go. Many pet owners who have indoor dogs and who are gone for several hours at a time enjoy the convenience of using Training Pads long after their pet is housetrained.

How old should my puppy be before housetraining starts?

Start housetraining immediately. The second you bring your new puppy home put him down where you want him to do his business - on the pad.

Why doesn't my puppy go immediately on the Training Pad?

Your puppy will need to be trained since he is unfamiliar with what you want him to do. Continue to bring him back to the pad after eating, napping and playing. Soon, he will be successful in eliminating on the pad.

What can I do to stop my dog from playing with the Training Pad?

Your pet will learn that the pad is a place to urinate after he's gone on it
a few times, after that he will not want to play with it any longer.

How many times can my dog use the pad?

The size of your pet is a determining factor. A puppy or small dog could use the same pad for 2 or more days. A full-grown large dog might need two pads per day.

How do I make sure he knows he's done it right?

Make sure you congratulate your dog when he's done his deed in the spot you want him to. Feed him a treat and say things like "good boy", "good doggie" and pet him in the back or his head softly. He will know that he's done something right and this will encourage him to keep doing it.
